RARE LACQUERED SHELF CLOCK BY LITCHFIELD MANNING COMPANY. Circa 1865, Connecticut. This papier-mache and lacquered example with mother-of-pearl inlays retains its original paper label of the “LITCHFIELD MANNING CO./LITCHFIELD CONN.,USA” and fitted with a replacement period eight day spring driven brass movement. The scrolling case, paint decorated overall with floral sprays and with mother-of-pearl flowers. The enameled painted dial with Roman numeral chapter ring centering a painted landscape. The center of the clock with an allegorical religious scene of a figure holding a cross flanked by a dove and a heart within small towers. The whole raised on a molded plinth with ogee bracket feet and scalloped apron. SIZE: 26″ h x 20-1/2″ w x 5-3/4″ d. PROVENANCE: Connecticut family home which descended from Sarah Upson Goodrich (Mrs. Oliver R. Beckwith) who descended from the Rev. Charles Chauncey, President of Harvard College and Elder William Brewster. Sarah was a member of the Connecticut chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America. CONDITION: Structurally very good. The painted dial in need of restoration. Losses to lacquer on feet. 9-21862 (1,500-2,500)
