PROTOTYPE OF THE VERY FIRST SIDE EJECT LEVER ACTION MARLIN EVER BUILT. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). NSN. Rare, one of a kind, the only one built, this is THE FIRST side ejection lever action Marlin ever built and the only one built. It is based on the L.L. Hepburn Patent 298377 which is one of the patents for the 1888 model but with the side eject system. It has a 27-5/8″ oct bbl, full magazine with half nickel front sight & semi-buckhorn rear sight. Only markings on the entire rifle are “L.L. HEPBURN” on the top flat just in front of the rear sight. It is mounted with extremely beautiful uncheckered streaky walnut with straight stock & semi-crescent buttplate. Receiver is short & blocky with a scalloped top and flat side bolt with a square loading port. It has a straight lever like the 1888 and a short spur & curved hammer. Bottom of the stock has a rectangular brass plate bearing the number “206”, apparently an old museum tag. This rifle is pictured in the open position on p. 168 of the book Marlin Firearms, Brophy. A rare & wonderful opportunity to own a piece of history. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain most of a fine orig brown finish with some slight muzzle wear and sharp edge wear. There is a small chemical spot on the left side of the bbl. Receiver & top tang retain most of their glossy bright orig blue with a few minor scratches. Lever & hammer retain most of their orig case colors, faded on the outer edges. Buttplate retains virtually all its brilliant case colors. Wood is sound with minor handling & storage marks & some dulling on the left side of the forearm, otherwise retains about all of its bright orig factory finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-57441 (45,000-65,000)
