SPECTACULAR ENGRAVED WINCHESTER MODEL 1866 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 38056. Fabulous ’66 rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, German silver Rocky Mountain front sight with 900-yard Henry ladder rear sight & an early style tang sight with 3-1/2″ staff. It is mounted with very highly figured 3X center crotch cut flame grain walnut, uncheckered, with straight stock & crescent buttplate with trap containing a 4-pc brass & iron wiping rod. Receiver, forend cap & buttplate tang are spectacularly engraved by John Ulrich with the left side if the receiver having a very large oval vignette of a dog chasing a leaping stag in a field scene with hills & trees in the background. Surrounded by full coverage spectacular intertwined foliate & floral arabesque patterns with a very fine punch dot background. Front flats have similar but somewhat different Moorish engraved patterns with lots of open space & a fine punch dot background. Right side of the receiver has a very large unused Moorish style presentation panel surrounded by foliate arabesque patterns. Top of the receiver has a foliate spray just forward of the ejection port & a Moorish pattern with punch dot background behind. Border around the two sides is typical Ulrich. Forend cap has his trademark medallions & flower blossoms on each side. Buttplate tang has a deep incised foliate & geometric pattern. This rifle originally had gold wash over silver plate with most of the gold wash now missing. Large vignette & portions of the left side have strong gold remaining with strong gold on the front sling swivel. There are traces of gold around the lever pivot & beside the trigger & underneath the wood on the tangs. Left side of the top tang under the wood is engraved “J.U.” and has 3 “X’s” and a small “S” on the side of the bottom tang. Last four digits of the serial number are stamped in the top tang channel of the buttstock & appear again inside the toe of the buttplate. Altogether a most spectacular & unusual ’66. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains about 93-95% strong bright orig blue with fine edge wear & some light nicks & scratches with one small chemical spot on the right flat. Magazine tube retains about 85% orig blue turning slightly plum with a chemical spot on the left side. Forend cap, receiver & buttplate retain about all of their wonderful silver plating with the aforementioned strong gold wash on the left sideplate. Trigger & hammer retain about 90% strong case colors. Wood is sound with usual handling & use marks, a long scratch on the right side of the buttstock & a couple of lighter scratches on the forearm and overall retains most of the orig oil finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with scattered spots of light pitting. 4-56996 JR708 (60,000-100,000)
