RARE EXTREMELY EARLY IRON FRAME HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 2. Exceptionally rare rifle with an exceptionally low serial number. This rifle has 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral full magazine with orig spring and fall over. It has a slightly modified German silver front sight & an unusual 3-position folding leaf rear sight with the blades marked “3” and “5”, presumably the standing blade is “1”. Base is definitely early Henry. It is mounted in the rear dovetail. It has another dovetail in the normal position just forward of the receiver. Being the early style, it is made without lever latch. Receiver is usual configuration and is believed to be case colored. Removal of the sideplates discloses traces of case colors which are also found on the top rear edge of the receiver & outside of the right sideplate. It also has the appearance of case colors turned silver over most of the outside surfaces. Mounted with straight grain walnut buttstock with rnd heel iron buttplate with trap which contains an orig 4-pc hickory & iron wiping rod. Stock has a slightly perch belly profile. Left side of the lower tang under the wood is stamped with the number “41”. Same number appears in the top tang channel of the buttstock & inside the front edge of the tang of the buttplate. Screws are all orig & all are numbered “41”. How this mix up came to be is unknown, but it appears to have been a factory mix up since all of the numbers are still matching. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains strong orig blue in the forward part of the gullets with the balance of the bbl a pleasing smooth light brown patina. Receiver, as previously noted, appears to be case colors turned silver with some scattered light surface discoloration & wear on the right rear edge. Lever retains traces of case colors & the hammer 75-80% faded case colors. Stock is sound and retains most of a professionally restored finish with a few minor handling & storage marks. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of pitting. 4-56999 JR705 (135,000-165,000)
