SPECTACULAR EARLY ENGRAVED HENRY RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 17. Fabulous Henry with 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine, orig spring & follower with German silver front sight & 1000-yard, 1st type, Henry ladder rear sight mounted in the slot on the receiver. Rear seat on the bbl is empty. It is mounted with extremely beautiful, highly figured, sunburst & shell pattern American walnut with straight stock & rnd heel brass buttplate with trap containing a 4-pc iron & hickory wiping rod. Receiver is silver plated & beautifully engraved with about 80% coverage on both sides of receiver consisting of wonderfully executed foliate arabesque patterns with feather motif borders similar to the engraving on serial #6, the famous Abraham Lincoln Henry rifle, serial #7, the W. T. Moyers Henry rifle and serial #9, the Gideon Wells Henry rifle. Although our rifle is not so elaborate as those mentioned above, the engraving is equally spectacular. Left side has a blank elliptical panel similar to the one on serial #7. All of these rifles are pictured on pp. 11 & 13 of Winchester Engraving, Wilson. Our rifle received a full color treatment with three views on p. 15 of the same book. This rifle is silver plated with case colored lever & hammer. Serial number appears on the left side of the lower tang under the wood with the same number appearing in the top tang channel of the buttstock & again inside the front edge of the buttplate tang. All of the stock screws are orig & bear the matching serial number, “17”. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 93-95% strong orig blue, bright in the gullets, beginning to turn plum elsewhere with some dulling. Receiver retains 75-80% strong orig silver plating with most of the losses from flaking on the front part of the receiver & on the top tang. Lever retains dark case colors in the sheltered areas & the hammer about 95% dark case colors. Buttplate retains about 40% orig silver plating. Stock has a couple of minor grain checks with light handling & use marks & retains most of its bright orig factory varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-56997 JR706 (225,000-275,000)
