WM. H. HORSTMAN & SONS 1850 FOOT OFFICER’S SWORD. This sword has a 31-3/4″ blade. The fuller to within 9-1/4″ of the tip. The smaller fuller to within 11-1/2″ of the tip. The ricasso reads “W.H. Horstman/& Sons/PHILADELPHIA”. The opposing side of the blade with the impressed Kingshead mark of Gebruder Weyersburg of Solingen with whom Horstman had a lengthy business relationship. The blade back has the “iron proof” mark on the spine. The heavily etched and decorated blade engraved “E PLURIBUS UNUM” amongst scrolling acanthus leaves and military trophies. The opposite side similarly decorated and additionally engraved “U.S.” The blade joined to a cast brass hilt with pierced acanthus leaf designs centering “U.S.” The handle wrapped in silver cord with brass wound thread. The sword is accompanied with a metal scabbard with brass mounts. SIZE: Overall length is 38-1/2″. Blade dimensions as previously noted. CONDITION: Generally good condition with undisturbed patina on scabbard. The hilt with wear and surface blemishes. Silver and brass wrapping intact. Blade with multiple shallow nicks on cutting edge.
