COLT ARTILLERY SGL ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 55385. Blue & case colored with 5-1/2″ bbl and 1-pc walnut grip. As with most artillery revolvers the serial numbers are completely mixed with the bbl having the remnant number “7503” which is over stamped with a Colt assembly or batch number “1044”. Frame has “DFC” sub-inspector marks (David F. Clark). Trigger guard is numbered “18609” with an “A.P. Casey” sub-inspector mark. Backstrap is serial number “54598” and is without a sub-inspector mark. Grip fits very well and has a large “RAC” (Rinaldo A. Carr) cartouche on the right side surmounted by the date “1903”. Bottom of each side of the grip is stamped “R.A.C.” Cylinder has a faint “6492”. Ejector rod housing is of the 2nd type with a bull’s eye ejector rod head and a tiny “K” at the front end of the housing. Cylinder pin is the early type. Accompanied by a Colt Factory letter identifying this revolver has having been shipped April 1, 1903 to the U.S. Government at the Springfield Armory in a shipment of 100 similar revolvers. Bbl length & grips are not listed. Under remarks it states that the orig records pertaining to this revolver were lost or destroyed many years ago and states that it was returned & refinished & shipped as noted. Also accompanied by a Kopec letter listing all the above information with some additional military history. He states that this revolver was altered at the Colt Factory in 1903 for use in the Philippine insurrection. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains 97-98% strong bright orig blue & the cylinder about 95%. Bbl address & cal. marking have been re-rolled during the restoration process. Frame & hammer retain 80-85% case colors, brilliant in the sheltered areas, turning gray elsewhere. Screws, with one or two exceptions, are fine and retain most of their orig blue. Grip frame retains 80-85% orig blue, strong & bright around the trigger guard & top of the back strap with the front & back straps thinning to gray. Grip is sound with minor nicks & dings and retains a fine oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore. 4-56502 JR559 (7,000-12,000)
