JOHN N HESS (American, Late 19th Century) THE RED LION INN. Oil on canvas scene shows a four horse led stagecoach with three people in front seat. They make the turn onto a dirt road in front of a Colonial Inn with large front porch and tall sign “Red Lion”. The host and hostess are out on the porch and the man waves the hat at the oncoming coach. A well pump and trough are seen in front to water the horses. A two-wheel carriage is seen on grass and other buildings amongst the trees. All under a blue and cloud sky. Signed lower right “J. N. Hess” and dated “76”. Housed in an outstanding gesso decorated deep 19th Century frame. SIZE: 17” x 26”. CONDITION: Relined, spot inpainting. Very good. 9-72905 MD (3,000-5,000)
