JOHN JOSEPH ENNEKING (American, 1841-1916) “THE ELIOT HOMESTEAD”. Oil on canvas scene shows an old woman in a Windsor rocker mending a bonnet. An open window has sunlight shining through with landscape outside. She sits next to a tavern table with a pewter pitcher and plate with fabric. A colorful Colonial fireplace with a mantle full of items and fireplace equipment in and around the fireplace. The post and beam home has a paneled right wall with open door and staircase leading upstairs. A sleeping cat is seen next to woman. Signed lower left “Enneking”. A paper inscription is attached to back “Enneking, “Old Woman” Williams & Everett-Boston 1883, Price $1800 (Boston Art Club Donation)”. Housed in a fine replacement gilt frame. SIZE: 24-1/4” x 34-1/2”. CONDITION: Relined, inpainting. Very good. 9-29290 (4000-6000)
