1940 UNION PACIFIC “BIG BOY” WITH TENDER SCALE MODEL. In 1940, Union Pacific required a train that could handle the rugged mountain terrain, yet sustain speeds of 50 mph on flat land. Union Pacific was America’s first transcontinental railroad and evolution of the States meant a growing demand for transporting enormous shipments over a great distances. This line came to be known as the Big Boys. This cutaway version shows the intricate inner workings of this mammoth machine. With 4-4-8 wheel arrangement, it pulls a 16 wheel tender.
