CASED COLT LONDON SGL ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 455. SN 140873. Fine early English Colt with Colt’s Pall Mall London address, blue & case colored with 7-1/2″ bbl, having an odd shaped, Walter Winans’ inspired, large, target sight with partridge type blade. It has case colored frame with 1-pc walnut grip and tiny British proofs on the bbl & cylinder. Apparently Colt had a few of these revolvers made up with this front sight to attempt to lure Mr. Winans away from Smith & Wesson. Mr. Winans was an American expatriate born in Russia. He was a shooting champion at Bisley & Wimbledon in England for many years and in his day was a recognized world champion. He represented the USA shooting team in the Olympics winning a gold medal in 1908 & a silver in 1912. Accompanied by a fine English oak casing with brass medallion in the lid and the maker’s label with Glasshouse Street, Piccadilly Circus address. It has red felt lining compartmented for the revolver with special allowance for the extra size of the front sight. It also includes an oak 30-cartridge board, a brass & ebony wiping rod with jag & brush and a pewter Dixon oil bottle. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 75-80% thin orig blue with a chemical spot on the right side and some thinning on the left side. Frame retains 85-90% orig case colors, strong & bright in the sheltered areas, thinning towards silver elsewhere. Back strap & butt strap retain about 90% strong orig blue with the front strap & trigger guard retaining about 92-93% orig blue. Grips are crisp with slightly worn edges & retain about 98% orig varnish. Screws are crisp with most of their orig blue. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Case & accessories are extremely fine with a few nicks in the lid & light soil on the inside bottom. A fine English set. 4-57418 JR632 (7,500-12,500)
