VERY RARE AMERICAN CASED COLT SGL ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 16259. Rare early civilian sgl action in the 16,000 range where most of the production was assigned to the military. Our revolver is usual configuration with 7-1/2″ bbl, nickel finish with 1-pc walnut grip. It has 2-line patent dates and slanted letter bbl address with serifs at each end. It has 1st type ejector rod housing & bull’s eye ejector rod head. All the screws & cylinder pin are niter-blue. It is accompanied by the extremely rare, American walnut casing with purple velvet lining and a wooden cartridge block drilled for 50 cartridges along with a compartment for a full box of cartridges. It has a mortised brass lock with brass keyhole shaped escutcheon. There is a small compartment in the upper right corner. Also accompanying is an “L”-shaped Colt screwdriver and a small wooden grease box. It is further accompanied by a Colt Factory letter stating that the record for this revolver is not available. However, the letter identifies serial numbers 16254, 16256, 16258, 16260 & 16261, which were all shipped with nickel-plating. Given the fact that a 1-pc wood grip was the standard for that time, it can be assumed that this revolver was shipped with orig nickel-plating & wood grip. Numbers in grip strap panel matches the guns serial numbers. This revolver once was part of the famous George R. Repaire Collection and is accompanied by a copy of a letter from Mr. Repaire dated November 14, 1978, to Tom Odom of Huntsville, Alabama, wherein he states he purchased this revolver at least 27 years prior to that date at the San Francisco Gun Exchange for $388.00. He states that he parted with it reluctantly. In addition there is a copy of an advertising page from The Gun Report, date not indicated, for Ron Ogan of Ogan’s Antiques, well-known Colt sgl action dealer, advertising this revolver for sale. Ogan states in the ad that Mr. Odom had sold this revolver to a Mr. Richard Atkinson, a well known collector, and he further states that this exact revolver is pictured on p. 18 of the book The Colt Sgl Action Army Revolver, Kopec, Graham & Moore and that the bbl address is pictured on p. 15 of that same book. There is also a copy of a photograph of this revolver in its case with the cartridge block filled with cartridges. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Overall retains about 95-96% strong bright orig nickel with some flaking around the muzzle & forcing cone area on the right side. Left side of the frame has a couple more small spots of flaking, otherwise the nickel is strong & bright. Grips are crisp with only a minor nick or two on the bottom edges and retain about all of their strong bright factory varnish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore with a few scattered spots of light pitting near the muzzle. Screw heads retain most of their niter blue. Case is generally sound with one small crack in the bottom with light handling & storage marks and a series of gouges along the upper front edge. Lining is extremely fine, retaining a rich dark purple color with the impression of the cylinder, edge of the grip & muzzle in the lid with heavier wear in these points in the bottom. Altogether an extremely rare & seldom encountered set. 4-55090 JR422 (40,000-60,000)
