RARE WINCHESTER 1ST MODEL 1873 DELUXE LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF. SN 795. Fine early rifle with 24-1/4″ oct bbl, full magazine, replacement front sight & a fixed rear sight with a Lyman tang sight. Receiver has the early mortised dust cover with raised checkered thumb print. Wood is straight grain American walnut with early style checkered forearm & straight stock with crescent buttplate & trap. It has a sgl set trigger. Checkering has been amateurishly re-cut. CONDITION: About good. Bbl & magazine tube retain an even dark brown, as found, attic patina with a ding and some light pitting on the right side near the muzzle. Receiver retains about 60% casehardening turned silver with the worn areas a dark patina. Wood, with its aforementioned amateur re-checkering, is sound & retains a dark oiled patina, possibly an old restored finish. Entire rifle is covered with a very heavy coating of old dried oil and should clean substantially better than it is. Mechanics are fine, strong bore, dark in the grooves with moderate to heavy pitting. Pierre Renaud Collection 4-55642 JR238 (8,000-12,000)
