RARE WINCHESTER 2ND MODEL 1876 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 50 Express (50-95). SN 9776. Fine early Express rifle with 22-1/4″ heavy rnd bbl, button magazine with ivory bead hunting front sight & short semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges. It has screwed on dust cover rail with impressed thumb print dust cover marked “WINCHESTER EXPRESS / 50 CAL 95 GRS”. Left sideplate is marked with the English distributor’s name “JNO. RIGBY & CO. / 72 ST JAME’S STT. / LONDON”. Top tang has a sliding thumb safety that fits into a notch in the back of the hammer when it is at half cock. Bbl & top front edge of the receiver have British proofs. Wood is very nicely figured American walnut, uncheckered, with straight stock & smooth steel buttplate. This was likely someone’s India tiger rifle or African big game rifle. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 75% orig blue with evenly distributed freckles of light surface pitting. Receiver & sideplates retain 50-60% glossy bright blue, stronger on the right side, brilliant in the sheltered areas with the losses flaked, not worn, to a light patina. Lever retains 50-60% strong case colors and the hammer about 98% brilliant colors. Wood is sound with a series of small bruises on the left side of the wrist with light scratches & dings and the forearm retains an even smooth patina with the buttstock retaining 85-90% bright orig varnish.
