RARE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 DELUXE LIGHT WEIGHT LEVER ACTION TAKE DOWN RIFLE. Cal. 38-70. SN 7586. Rare light weight rifle in a very rare caliber with 22″ tapered rnd bbl, Lyman pedestal mounted front sight, Lyman 6A 2-leaf folding bbl sight & a deluxe Lyman 21 receiver sight. Bbl is quite unusual with its integral pedestals for both front & rear sights. It has half magazine & is a take down. Wood is very beautiful, highly figured center crotch cut sunburst American walnut with “H” style checkered forearm & serpentine pistol grip stock, 13-1/4″ over a Winchester hard rubber buttplate. It has sling eyes on the forend cap & buttstock. It is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum yellow sheet indicating this rifle was shipped 8-11-1887 as a rifle in 45-70 with checkered pistol grip wood & plain trigger. It was returned & repaired four times between 1907-1910. There is a notation that “This bbl has been altered outside of factory and does not bear company’s stamp. This explains the unusual pedestal mounts for the sights & lack of roll markings. Ca. marking, however, is factory original. Apparently during one of these returns to the factory it was altered to its present caliber & made into a take down model. Altogether a very rare & unusual rifle. Removing the buttplate discloses that this appears to be the orig length of the stock as there is no apparent evidence of any alterations. It has three drilled holes in the butt to lighten the weight and in these holes are a bundle of wax coated matches, a spare Lyman ivory bead front sight and a spare main spring along with some cloth patches & remains of the orig wax paper around the main spring. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain about all of a fine commercial finish that was probably done at Winchester. Receiver, forend cap & takedown ring retain virtually all of their fine bright orig Winchester finish. Receiver has two or three small scratches & is slightly thinned on the bottom. Lever retains 50-60% faded case colors & the hammer about 90%. Wood is sound with minor nicks & scratches & retains about all of its factory finish. Insert from the grip cap is replaced with a piece of wood. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. This rifle is an enigma that when solved should prove to be very interesting reading for a future article. 4-57134 JR658 (12,500-17,500)
