*VERY RARE DELUXE WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 SHORT RIFLE. Cal. 45-90. SN 130841. Spectacular short rifle with 20″ rnd bbl, full magazine, Lyman front sight, a homemade slot blank in the rear seat and a Lyman tang sight. It has highly figured, 3X, center crotch cut sunburst American walnut with “H” style checkered forearm & pistol grip stock with nickeled Swiss buttplate. It has the assembly number “323” on the left side of the lower tang along with three “X’s”. Assembly number appears in the top tang channel of the stock and inside the toe of the buttplate. Accompanied a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle and indicating shipment Jan. 5, 1909 to Order 186314. It letters with Lyman front & rear sights. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 95-97% strong orig blue with a small scratch & sight wear over the chamber area. Receiver retains 60-65% thin orig blue, primarily on the side, with some thin blue over the receiver ring. Bottom & rear of the top edges are a brown patina. Lever retains traces of case colors, bright in the sheltered areas, and the hammer about 70% dark case colors. Buttplate retains about 90% dull orig nickel. Wood is sound with the forearm showing moderate to heavy wear & a bruise in the checkering with some oil staining near the receiver & forend cap, otherwise retains about 85% strong orig varnish. Buttstock has several chips in the finish on the left side with light nicks & scratches and a series of pinpoint nicks also on the left side along with an old bruise on the right side. Checkering shows moderate to heavy wear and overall retains 85-90% strong orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, very bright shiny bore. 4-57431 JR637 (27,500-37,500)
