FINE CARVED WALNUT HANGING RAILROAD PRESENTATION REGULATOR CLOCK. Circa 1880. Philadelphia. “Made for /E.B. Edward/President/Ridge Avenue Railway Co./April 1880.” and so engraved in script on the reverse of the dial. The Aesthetic Movement carved walnut rectangular case with triple crest above a carved and burl trimmed frieze, above the conforming case fitted with a single glass panel door flanked by engaged columns, on a molded plinth over twin pediments or corbels. There is a silvered medallion inset at the bottom of the case inscribed: “EMIL WERNER/MAKER/PHILADELPHIA”. The large 17″ brass dial with Roman Numeral chapter ring and sweep seconds subsidiary dial centering a brass plaque inscribed “William E. Harpur/Philadelphia”. The original unmarked (possibly Seth Thomas) time only eight-day movement is driven by a single weight. Fitted with a brass and nickel plated six-tube pendulum and custom beat scale. Door key, winder, weight & pendulum present. NOTE: The Ridge Avenue Railway operated as a horse drawn passenger rail service during the second half of the 19th Century in Philadelphia, PA. William E. Harpur was a retailer of clocks and scientific instruments located at 428 Chestnut St in Philadelphia. In 1872, he installed a Seth Thomas tower clock into his building. In 1882 he reset the Philadelphia principal clock to Standard Time also known as railway time. SIZE: 8′ h x 31″ w x 13″ d. PROVENANCE: Dr. Charles Bradley, Lubbock, TX. CONDITION: Very fine overall.
