*RARE SMITH & WESSON TRIPLE LOCK TARGET DA REVOLVER. Cal. 44 Spcl. SN 3979. Blue finish with 7-1/2″ rnd bbl, tall Patridge front sight with round top frame with adjustable rear sight. It is fitted with unnumbered deep gold medallion diamond checkered walnut grips & has the unusual 3rd latch feature on the front edge of the crane. This revolver was ordered by & shipped to A.L.A. Himmelwright, a late 19th century, early 20th century noted historian, author, hunter & adverturer. He is perhaps best known as the author of Pistol & Revolver Shooting, published in 1908, revised 1915 and also the author of The Pistol & Revolver Handbook. He was an early researcher & proponent of reloading and in 1900 developed & patented the 44 wadcutter bullet which later evolved into the 44 semi-wadcutter, fathered by Elmer Keith and is still in use today. Himmelwright also wrote other books, notably Snowbound in 1895 and The San Francisco Earthquake & Fire, a Brief History of the Distaster in 1906. This revolver, SN 3979, is most likely the “long-barreled” S&W that Himmelwright & others are shown shooting in numerous photos in his book, Pistol & Revolver Shooting. This is a very fine tuned up triple lock owned & used by one of the more famous shooting personalities of his day. CONDITION: Very fine. Overall retains about 85% strong bright orig blue with some light muzzle edge wear & slight thinning on the sides of the bbl. Cylinder has light edge wear with a drag line. Front & back straps are mostly a blue/gray patina with traces of orig blue. Frame has strong bright blue on the left side with some thinning on the sideplate adjacent to the trigger. Grips are crisp with light wear & most of the gold on the medallions. Mechanics are extremely smooth & crisp with brilliant shiny bore. 4-57448 JR785 (7,000-8,500)
