PIERRE JULES MENE (French, 1810-1879) “VAINQUEUR DU DERBY”. Fine bronze depicting a racehorse with jockey atop. The front leg is lifted slightly in walking pose. Signed on top of base “PJ Mene”. Mounted to a green marble base. Nice dark patina. This statue was sculpted by PJ Mene in 1863,The most popular of Mene’s racing studies, “The Derby Winner-Vainqueur Du Derby” is thought to represent the 1862 Derby Winner Caractacus. The wax model was exhibited at the Salon in 1863, with a bronze version following a year later. SIZE: Bronze: 15-1/4″ h x 16″ l. CONDITION: Very good, back left leg appears to have moved but seems to be fine. Marble base has perpendicular break but still attached. 9-97092 (5,000-8,000)
