WHITNEY-LAIDLEY STYLE 1 ROLLING BLOCK SPORTING/TARGET RIFLE. Cal. 44-77. SN 6169. Fine early rifle with 30” medium weight oct bbl, combination front sight, tiny 2-position, ladder rear sight and a thick base, vernier tang sight with 4-3/4” staff. Caliber “44” is over chamber area & bottom of bbl just forward of forend tip is stamped “77GR”. Mounted with nicely figured, burl, slab sawed, American walnut, uncheckered, with 11-1/4” tapered forearm with rnd forend cap & straight stock with smooth, steel, shotgun buttplate. It has the Laidley breechblock patented in 1866 by T.S.S. Laidley & C.A. Emery and purchased by Whitney in 1877. There was an estimated 5,000 sporting & target rifles manufactured with this breechblock. CONDITION: Fine plus. Bbl retains 75-80% brilliant orig blue with top three flats having moderate rust which has etched the surface. Receiver retains virtually all of its brilliant case colors with trigger guard & bottom tang faded to gray. Forearm has a couple of hairlines at top left rear corner with numerous dings & bruises. Buttstock is sound and overall the wood retains most of its orig finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 8-76180 JR405 (3,000-5,000)
