RARE SMITH & WESSON REVOLVING RIFLE. Cal. 320 S&W. SN 680. Blue finish with 18″ keyhole bbl, tiny slip-on front sight and 2-position flip rear sight. It has unnumbered diamond checkered walnut grips and a coarse checkered, tiny, replacement, walnut forearm. It is accompanied by an orig detachable buttstock with nicely figured walnut & a Smith & Wesson embossed hard rubber buttplate. Also accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter identifying this rifle as having been shipped April 6, 1883 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY. Robinson was Smith & Wesson’s largest distributor. Letter also states that it was shipped with its 18″ bbl & checkered mottled red & black hard rubber grips & forearm. CONDITION: Fine. Overall retains 50-60% fine restored blue, turning plum on the bbl & back of the frame. Strong in the sheltered areas with two or three spots of pitting on the sides of the bbl & scattered fine pitting on the rib & cylinder. Inside the frame and on the recoil shield has moderate to heavy pitting. Replacement wood grips are sound and show moderate to heavy wear. After-market forearm is fine and retains most of its custom finish. Hammer will not hold at full cock and cylinder does not lock well. Strong bright bore with scattered pitting. Stock is sound with the iron retaining a plum patina and the wood most of a restored finish. 4-56402 JR439 (4,000-7,000)
