RARE CASED SMITH & WESSON REVOLVING RIFLE. Cal. 320 S&W. SN 337. All blue finish with 20″ keyhole bbl, small slip-on front sight and a 2-position flip rear sight. It has dark red mottled hard rubber grips & tiny forearm. It is accompanied by an orig Smith & Wesson detachable walnut stock with Smith & Wesson embossed checkered hard rubber buttplate and orig tang sight along with a tiny globe front sight with crosshairs. Also accompanying is an orig Smith & Wesson leather felt lined trunk case with carrying handle & brass corner reinforcements. Bottom of the case has a “New South Wales government railways” sticker that is marked also “Passenger’s Luggage” and stamped initials along with some pencil initials. Additionally accompanying is a Smith & Wesson Factory letter identifying this rifle as having been shipped July 9, 1880 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY. Letter states that Robinson was Smith & Wesson’s largest distributor. It was in a shipment of twenty units, ten of which had 16″ bbls & ten with 20″ bbls. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 90% glossy bright blue with a cleaned area on the right side of the muzzle with fine pitting and another small cleaned area on the right side with two spots of pitting. Frame retains 88-90% strong blue with some flaking on the sideplate and thinning on the right side. Grips & forearm show light to moderate wear with the S&W logos removed from the grips; logo on forearm is fine. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with scattered fine pitting. Stock iron retains about 75% thin blue. Wood is sound & retains most of its orig varnish with light to moderate handling & use nicks & scratches and a large bruise on the left side. Buttplate has a crack at the heel. Case is worn & soiled with the added corner reinforcements & the straps missing. Handle is fine. Lining is moderately worn & soiled with a loose partition. Label on the bottom is soiled and chipped but legible. 4-56401 JR438 (12,500-17,500)
