LARGE MAJOLICA PLANTER ON PEDESTAL BASE. Late 19th century. The urn form planter applied with elephant handles on a circular footed plinth. The pedestal base with circular top, modeled in the form of a seated winged griffin on a conforming rectangular plinth with stepped base. The whole in a brown and white drip underglaze. SIZE: 55-1/2″ h overall, 33″ h of pedestal. CONDITION: The planter with damage to ends of elephant tusks. The plinth with large triangular repair. The pedestal base with minor chips on wing tips. The plinth with what appears to be an irregular old filled crack, probably a result of firing. Otherwise very good overall with strong colors. 9-96856 (1,200-1,600)
