OUTSTANDING HISTORIC QUANTRILL’S RAID LETTER. This detailed, well written three page letter was written by a survivor of Quantrill’s Raid on Lawrence, Kansas the day following, dated August 22, 1863. This eye witness account details many of atrocities that occurred. Quantrill’s early morning raid caught the entire citizenry and defenders unprepared. Almost no male was spared unless he had hidden or escaped. “Allison of the firm Duncan & Allison was shot and burned in his store. Jimmy Perine and Jimmy Eldridge, clerks in the store, of Eldridge & Ford were both shot after having given up everything, even to the keys to the money safe.” “Judge Carpenter was brutally murdered…” “Mr. Murphy was shot while giving them water from his well.” “Men without regard to age was murdered. I saw an old man with long flowing white beard lying among the dead”. The three page letter written on lined paper and addressed “Dear Uncle” is signed by its writer W.R. Brown who, for his good fortune lived in a home two miles out of the city. Also accompanying this lot is a recent issue of “North South Traders Civil War” in which a seven page article specifically about this letter is written. SIZE: Each sheet 10” high by 8” wide. CONDITION: Paper is toned with fold marks which have separation on the central fold mark about two inches in. The letter generally in very good and surprising, extremely readable script. 4-48659 JS22 (3,500-5,500 )
