FINE BELKNAP PERCUSSION TARGET RIFLE WITH FALSE MUZZLE AND LOADING KIT. Cal. 36. 26-1/2” octagonal bbl, marked “J. BELKNAP” in a tiny circle with a small eagle on either side and 13 stars in an arch above these marks on the lockplate. John Belknap worked in St. Johnsbury, Vermont from 1879 to 1887. Note the fine quality workmanship with the raised rim around the extended lockplate and the fine German silver inlays in the stock. The bullet starter is made from a piece of turned bone with a German silver ring to fit the muzzle. The latter is scratched with the initials LHJ, probably an early owner. The starter rod appears to be walnut but is stained dark. The 7 x 12 x 6″ leather box has been converted to hold tools for this rifle. The tools include a bullet mold, a 2-pc swage, a combination nipple wrench/screwdriver from a Civil War gun, 3 tins of caps, 2 boxes of bullets and a powderhorn. The tools are in good condition, the box is somewhat skuffed with a badly flaked carrying handle, but is still solid. CONDITION: Fine overall with only traces of finish on the metal. Wood retains much of its varnish but has some crackling on the cheekpiece. Action is fine. 4-52667 FS127 (3,000-5,000)
