HISTORIC DOCUMENTED CUSTER BATTLEFIELD RETRIEVED REMINGTON NEW MODEL ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 44. SN 29449. Usual configuration with 8″ oct bbl, dovetailed cone front sight, brass trigger guard & 2-pc walnut grips. Various metal parts have inspector’s initials. Cylinder pin is a broken remnant. Accompanied by a signed typewritten statement addressed to W.D. Fischer, Secretary-Manager of the Custer Battlefield Highway in Mitchell, SD dated Sheriden, WY, Aug. 28, 1928. It is over the signature of James Rennie wherein he is sending “the ” to Mr. Fischer upon the opening of the museum in the “New Custer Highway Building”. He states that: “and if you remember when you started the C.B.H (Custer Battlefield Highway) some years ago in Sheridan you wanted to get one of the pistols which I had in my possession, found on the Custer Battle Field. I want to do my bit in helping to advertise the West and am sending you the Remington. It was secured in 1901 from Dusty Amsdon of Dayton, WY. Dusty was an old Government Scout and visited the Battle Field shortly after the fight and found several pistols and some rifles and I secured two from him”. There is also a notarized bill of sale transferring this revolver and a Colt Model 1849 SN 199673 (also being sold in this auction) to William Burger of San Francisco, CA and states that it was displayed for many years in the Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood, SD as part of the W.D. Fischer Collection. There is also a notarized statement over the signature of “G.A. Barwig” dated 6-29-51 wherein he states that this revolver remained for “a long time” in the W.D. Fischer Collection which was housed in Adams Memorial Hall at Deadwood, SD and was given to Barwig on Nov. 24, 1942 and thence to a Mr. William Steele on June 29, 1951. Bottom of the page has another notarized statement transferring this revolver to Mr. S.L. Hutcheson of Greenwich, CT on 4-25-52. There is also a brief biography of this revolver and Mr. Fischer. CONDITION: About good. Cylinder pin as noted and the rammer pivot screw is replaced with a pin. Overall retains a dark brown smooth patina showing heavy wear with rounded edges with most of the bbl address still visible. Lock bolt is out of time and does not function properly all the time. Grips are sound showing heavy wear. Strong bore with moderate to heavy pitting. 4-57423 (35,000-40,000)
