SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1888 TRAPDOOR RIFLE WITH ROD BAYONET. Cal. 45-70. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. SN 518077. “SWP” cartouche dated “1891”. This is among one of the last produced and has all of the latest features including the 1-pc trigger guard, Buffington sight & trap door in the buttplate. It also has issue marks “8 /B /5”on top of buttplate. Although it was not considered to be anything special by Springfield, has a fine piece of tiger stripe walnut. CONDITION: 90% blue overall. 60% casehardening on the breechblock turning dark. Wood is excellent with minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. 4-57177 FS229 (1,000-1,500)
