EXCEPTIONAL SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1871 ROLLING BLOCK RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Usual configuration with 36” rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug, with 1860’s style, musket ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards. It has full length forestock with two bands & slotted head wiping rod with a sling loop on upper band. Receiver is marked “MODEL 1871” on left side with an eagle over “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / 1872” on right side. Mounted with nicely figured, slab sawed, uncheckered, American walnut with straight stock & musket buttplate. Left side of wrist has the “ESA” cartouche in an oval, upside down. There is a small, square cartouche on bottom of stock below the bottom tang. The number “14” is stamped into wood by toe. CONDITION: Extremely fine, as new, probably unfired. All metal, except receiver, is in orig “white”, with bbl & bands having been lightly cleaned at one time. Receiver retains most of its orig case colors, strong & bright in sheltered areas, moderately faded elsewhere. Wood is sound with a couple of dings on buttstock & minor handling & storage marks elsewhere and retains most of its orig arsenal oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore with a few scattered spots of fine pitting in grooves. 4-60716 JR390 (3,500-5,000)
