EXTREMELY RARE BUFFALO SOLDIER SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1870 TRAPDOOR CARBINE. Cal. 50-70. 2” rnd bbl. Only 362, Model 1870 Trapdoor Carbines were made. This one is extremely well documented. It originally appeared in Red Jackson’s 1972 Catalogue, which had many rare trapdoors. A new booklet identifies the marking “E9” branded on the right side of the stock, as Company E, 9th Cav. Seven of these carbines were shown as issued to the 9th Cav. at Fort Concho, TX. The 9th Cav. was one of the two Black Cav. units known as the Buffalo Solders. The E9 marking was both described and pictured in the Jackson catalogue and certainly predates the time when it would have made any financial difference. It was one of the cheapest guns on the page at $325, with the trapdoor shotgun, the 1882 Carbine, and even a low serial number gun being more expensive. CONDITION: Gray patina overall with light surface rust. Some battering on top of the breechblock. Cartouche is visible on the stock but not readable. Heavy wear on the forearm and some gouges opposite the lock. 4-57172 FS269 (6,500-7,500)
