CUSTER RANGE SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 SADDLE RING CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. SN 6513. Standard early carbine with 22″ bbl, square base front sight with 1200 yard ladder rear sight. It has high arch “1873” dated breech block & lockplate with eagle & crossed arrows on the breech block. It is mounted in an orig 1873 stock with sling bar & ring on the left side and “ESA” cartouche on the left wrist and has a long grip with short comb and carbine buttplate without trap. Stock is not drilled for a trap either. It has 2-pc trigger guard with sgl band & stacking swivel. This carbine was almost assuredly issued to one of the frontier cavalry units & certainly falls within the known Custer 7th Cavalry issues. CONDITION: Good to very good. No orig finish remains on the bbl being a mottled silver & brown patina with moderate to heavy pitting. Receiver retains traces of orig finish with the hammer & lockplate a brown patina. Receiver & breech block have moderate to heavy pitting. Stock is sound with usual nicks, dings & scratches & a few bruises with a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with fine pitting and one spot of heavy pitting. 4-54962 JR762 (3,500-5,500)
