SCARCE INDIAN WARS PERIOD SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR CARBINE. Cal. 45-70. SN 20772. Assembled carbine using an 1873 bbl action & receiver with a later lockplate & hammer without date and a later stock with a trap under the orig 1873 buttplate that has no trap door. It has a 22″ rnd bbl, square base front sight with replacement blade and an orig 1873 rear sight. High arch breechblock has the “1873” date over an eagle, crossed arrows & “US”. Bbl band has a stacking swivel, the left side of the stock has a sling bar & ring and a 2-pc. trigger guard. This carbine was most likely originally issued to one of the western cavalry units, the 7th, 8th or 10th, all of which saw extensive frontier service during the Indian Wars Period. CONDITION: As noted, about good. Metal retains an even dark brown patina, probably an old restored finish. Stock is sound with usual nicks & dings, some cleaned up bruises, showing heavy wear with a fine old patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with some fine pitting.
