SPRINGFIELD OFFICER’S MODEL RIFLE. Cal. .45-70. NSN. Wonderful officer’s model trapdoor with 26” rnd bbl. Third type with short base tang sight. Standard foliate arabesque pattern engraving on lockplate, hammer, breechblock, upper tang, top of receiver, trigger bow & top of buttplate. Silver-plated pewter forearm tip has matching engraving. Standard markings including “US / MODEL / 1873” on top of the breechblock & “SWP / 1885” cartouche on the left side of the stock. It is equipped with a Freund patent wooden pistol grip and a Beech’s front sight with a gold washed sight ring. Cleaning rod is correct but has no finish on the front brass tip. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Bbl retains 93-95% strong orig blue turning slightly plum with light muzzle edge wear. Receiver retains 97-98% strong bright blue. Breech block retains about all of its orig case colors, strong & bright in the sheltered areas, faded elsewhere. Lockplate & hammer retain about 80% orig case colors, strong & bright in the sheltered areas, fading elsewhere, turned silver near the front end. Buttplate retains about 60% strong bright blue. Forend tip retains about 90% orig silver. Wood is sound with a gouge on the left side of the butt, moderate wear on the forestock checkering with light nicks, dings & scratches.
