CLASSICAL MARBLE STATUE OF HERAKLES KILLING SERPENTS. 2nd half 19th century. This marble statue, after the antique, depicting Herakles (Hercules) as a toddler, seated on a rock plinth and smiling with right hand raised to his mouth. In his left hand is held a serpent’s head, the body of which is beneath the boy, a tendril of vinery entwining the child’s legs. This rendering is from the mythological tale wherein Hera, wife of Zeus, attempted the murder of her infant stepson Herakles in his crib by sending two serpents while he slept. The young Herakles killed the snakes and laughingly threw their bodies out of the crib, incurring the greater hatred of Hera and admiration from the other gods on Olympus. SIZE: 38-1/2″ h. CONDITION: Structurally very good, with weathered surfaces, green and brown patina. 9-95516 (4,500-5,500)
