SCARCE VICENZO COMINAZZO ROYALTY QUALITY FLINTLOCK PISTOL. Cal. About 65. NSN. Spectacular pistol with 11” fluted round to ovoid shaped bbl with incised decorations on both sections with a turned transition, having foliate patterns at transition. Top flat is marked with maker’s name & three stamped stars. Flat in front of flash pan is marked with Batista’s name “G. Bai Tiani Giio”. Breech end of bbl & top tang have a deep relief carved face. Top of wrist, around top tang, has applied cast steel with a demon face at back end. Lockplate has another demon face at back end with a deep relief rendition of Leda & The Swan. Hammer is also deep relief cast with a human figure and foliate & floral decorations. Bottom of pan has another demon face, as does the front of frizzen. Side of frizzen spring is file decorated. Furniture is all iron with a sgl iron guide containing what is probably the orig iron tipped ramrod. Forestock has a carved transition with a demon face central applique. Sideplate also has a demon face with flower & vine decorations. Trigger guard has another demon face with a filigree front finial of flowers & vines and trigger plate with deep relief cast flowers & vines. Trigger has a cast relief of what appears to be a demon bird with human head & bird body. Buttcap, with its very long, thin langets, has a cast demon face on each side with full coverage flowers & vines and a tiny demon face screw cover. Sideplate has an added, lightly decorated belt hook. This pistol certainly dates before 1696, for tht is when Vincenzo Cominazzo was put to death. Altogether a most decorative & unusual pistol, probably made for Italian royalty. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Metal all has an old cleaned patina being a silver/gray color with some mottling on bbl and scattered fine pitting. Wood is sound & retains about all of a restored finish. Mechanics are a little stiff, dark bore. 4-58409 JR425 (3,000-5,000)
