CHARLES AHRENS “EXECUTIONER” ARCADE MACHINE. Circa 1920s, Charles Ahrens created a prolific amount of different working models/arcade devices. Always most intriguing, his working models depicted a plethora of different themes, such as this one portraying the execution of a prisoner. Most likely, the building housed within this case is a prison with guards positioned at entry and on upper walkway. Slowly the front doors open to reveal the hooded prisoner back to the viewer with a noose around his neck. In the background the priest reads him his last rites as soldiers look on. The ominous bell rings, and upon the final ring, the prisoner drops through the trap door to his untimely death. The oak case with a mirrored lower panel and elevated on fanciful cast iron claw feet. Now European machines are one of the last vestiges of untapped and amazing coin-operated devices and are highly sought after by American collectors as well as European collectors. SIZE: 78″ t. x 31″ w. x 19″ d. CONDITION: As typical, there has been some minor restoration to internal figures. Original operation was on English penny, however, some amateurish alterations have been made that will enable a quarter to activate the mechanism. These amateurish enhancements are easily reversed within less than a minute’s time. 1-8433 JL (10,000-15,000)
