RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE CONFEDERATE STAFF OFFICER’S SWORD. Made by Boyle & Gamble, Richmond, VA. Classic hilt pattern with CS under a star surrounded by a wreath. Scabbard is wood lined with leather cover. Ring mounts are decorated with series of dots and (tobacco?) leaves. Ring mounts are similar to ring mounts seen on some New Orleans made swords and swords of Mitchell & Tyler of Richmond, VA. Scabbard is confederate and most unusual. The mounts have not been encountered by the cataloguer before. They have New Orleans and Richmond characteristics and require further study. Reference: “A PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLEMENT OF CONFEDERATE SWORDS WITH ADDENDUM” by William A. Albaugh III. SIZE: Blade is 29” l. Overall is 37-1/4”. CONDITION: Scabbard shows two repairs to body and replaced screw to drag. Sword overall is unaltered. Sword has gray/brown blade with scattered pitting, never etched at ricasso (fault line) braised seam is present, typical of Boyle and Gamble products. Bottom of hilt stamped “26” typical of Boyle and Gamble mfg. Grip retains 90%+ original leather, original copper wire. Hilt retains good patina and trace of original gilt. 4-48865 (12,000-14,000)
