UNION CIVIL WAR GARRISON FLAG. This large Civil War American flag was originally found with the Confederate battle flag in the preceding lot. Both of these were literally wrapped and stored together. This typical 35 star Garrison flag is hand sewn and retains its original rope hoist. Of particular interest is a period inscription inked into the hoist “C. H. Manning”. Our speculation is that it is possible that this Union flag may have been captured by a Confederate from the same unit as the St. Andrews Cross Battle Flag above. Although this is not known at this time, its possible that research will, in time, reveal more. This should make for an exciting research project which could have some very interesting results. Both this flag and the St. Andrews Cross Battle Flag above were acquired from an estate in East Texas. SIZE: Approximately 7-1/2’ x 12’ long. CONDITION: Flag shows plenty of honest use, having numerous repairs and in use damage. Still retains strong blue, red, white and colors. 4-48649 JS47 (2,500-3,500)
