*RARE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903 SPORTER.

*RARE SPRINGFIELD ARMORY MODEL 1903 SPORTER. SN 1408432. Cal. 30-06. Fine Springfield sporting rifle with 24″ tapered rnd bbl dated “12-32”, made without rear sight sleeve. Receiver is mounted with a Lyman 48S receiver sight and bbl & receiver appear to be correctly drilled & tapped from the arsenal and have scope blocks which contain a Winchester A5 scope. Mounted in a 1-pc, nicely figured, uncheckered walnut half stock without grasping grooves and has a single grooved bbl band. It has its orig milled trigger guard & floorplate with sling loops and a semi-crescent checkered steel buttplate. Sling loops contain a “1918” dated orig military sling. Accompanied by a packet of provenance which includes copies of the Star gauging records and an orig target. Also included is a letter from the Springfield Research Service certifying that this rifle was shipped June 13, 1932 as a “sporting model” to Thomas C. Florich, New York, NY. Additionally there are military documents dated Jan. 17, 1935 where it appears that this rifle had its bbl changed at the Springfield Armory. It is believed that this is probably the last Springfield Sporter sold through the DCM (Division of Civilian Marksmanship, which operated through the National Rifle Association). Page 427 of The Springfield 1903 Rifles, Brophy, shows that the last serial number for an NRA Sporter was “1408446” and it is known that many of these rifles were sold directly from the arsenal to various military officers and organizations, including the FBI. CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Metal retains most of its orig fine arsenal blue with some slight wear on the front sight sleeve. Stock has a chip in grip cap, otherwise wood is sound with minor nicks & storage marks and retains virtually all of its orig arsenal oil finish. Sling is dry & slightly crackled but still strong & serviceable. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. Scope retains about 90% orig blue with crisp optics. 4-31995 JR253 (5,000-8,000)
