DENNISON “UNDERTAKER” COIN-OP AUTOMATON. Tucked away in a private collection for many many years, this wonderful automaton is fresh to the market. Manufactured by J. Dennison, prolific in the number and variation of automatons he created over the years, this is just another fine example of his work. Lugubrious in nature the scene depicted is of a gentleman in his coffin at a funeral parlor setting. When a coin is deposited the mechanism is activated and slowly a skeleton’s head appears behind the coffin. The corpse, a.k.a. John Burn, bolts to an upright position turning his head to view this morbid scene. In a flash the skeleton’s head is gone, but a more ominous persona is to appear…the devil himself! All the while the friendly mortician remains calm raising his hand, turning his head, and perhaps one can hear him mutter, “Mr. Burn must have been very bad in his lifetime??” Obviously this machine worked on an English penny as a nickel-plated plaque/coin entry inscribed “J. Dennison Leeds No. 53″ is affixed to the front of the cabinet. Machine appears to be in untouched original condition. Wood is typical of English production, perhaps a fruit wood, also in original finish. Appears there might have been a marquee of some type on top of the machine, which is not present. SIZE: 21-1/2″ w. x 14-1/2″ d. x 28” h. CONDITION: Overall very fine plus original condition. Rear wall has wood shrinkage, thus split through wallpaper. Machine being English has been converted to U.S. current and is in functional condition. 1-8134 JL (8,000-12,000) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Spring 2008 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
