VERY RARE THIRD TYPE COCHRAN TURRET RIFLE. SN 191. Cal. 38, 29-3/4” oct. barrel. Marked “COCHRANs / MANY / CHAMBERD / NON RECOIL / RIFLE” at the front of the top strap and “C.B. ALLEN / SPRINGFIELD / MASS.” at the rear. The 3-3/4” turret contains nice chambers and has a protective brass star on the bottom attached with two screws. A German silver plate on the bottom of the frame is more complicated than the one on the earlier guns. A German silver reinforce also covers the top of the star to eliminate the problem that appears on the earlier guns. The latch is a turn screw with a large notch in it to allow use of the sights mounted on the barrel. The barrel appears to have a sleeve to fit it to the frame. The deluxe walnut stock has a German silver butt plate. It is marked “18 / B.P.” on the left side. This marking is thought to have been a Canadian government marking, but no documentation has been found. CONDITION: Very good overall. Brown patina on the barrel mixed with light surface rust. The frame is generally gray with scattered areas of light pitting. There is a flaw on the left side of the frame which does not affect the strength of the gun. The stock has probably been re-varnished, but the checkering is still sharp. The ramrod has been replaced. The bore is bright. Mechanically excellent. 4-48757 FS123 (6,000-8,000)
