JAMES GALE TYLER (American, 1855-1931) SHIP IN DISTRESS. Outstanding oil on canvas scene shows a large sailing vessel wrecking on coastal rocks with cliff behind. Several crewmen are seen aboard and the central mast has the US flag upside down in distress signal. Large light green and white waves punish the boat. Signed lower right “James G. Tyler”. Housed in a magnificent gesso decorated period frame with a label from J. H. Gillespie’s Sons, New York. SIZE: 20” x 30”. CONDITION: Relined, inpainting. Very good. 9-70878 (8,000-12,000)
