COMMITTEE OF SAFETY FLINTLOCK MUSKET. NSN. 72 Cal. 49-1/4” part oct bbl with bayonet lug on top. The 6-3/8” long lockplate has no bridle on the frizzen or tumbler indicating an early date. The marking in front of the hammer seems to be for the French Arsenal “Tulle” but it is not clear. The bbl is marked underneath with the letter “A” cut by a chisel. There is some staking around the touchhole, but no bushing is visible. The large flat, brass sideplate suggests possible pre-Revolutionary manufacture. The trumpet shaped ramrod is possibly a replacement. There are no marks on the bbl which has a 11-1/2” octagonal section with a 3-1/2” tapering section to a ring where the reduced rnd bbl continues to the muzzle. There is a slight Brown Bess bulge in the forearm at the end of the octagonal section of the bbl. The tailpipe is fitted to the stock at this point. The stock has long flutes in the comb. The tang of the buttplate is 4” long and has two steps ending in a point. There is a raised carved beaver tail at the bbl tang. CONDITION: Smooth brown patina with light to moderate pitting at the breech. There is much chipping around the lockplate with the entire lower edge being gone. A 1-1/4” chip has been replaced at the toe of the stock which shows some signs of cleaning and refinishing. Mechanically fine. 4-60239 FS736 (4,500-6,000)
