ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS COWPERTHWAITE EAKINS (American, 1844-1916) TWO CHARCOAL NUDE STUDIES. 1)Charcoal on paper back view of a nude woman with arm extending and hand holding the edge of a door. Inscribed in pencil upper right “Mary Wittman (as posed) Done life d.15 _? 93”. Inscribed lower left in pencil “Feb. 20 93 Give to _ _?”. Right corner “Eakins” in capital letters. 2) Charcoal on paper of a seated nude man seated on a stool in sideways pose. His hands are on his knees and he looks straight ahead and has a mustache. Inscribed in pencil upper right illegibly, also “Eakins”. We are told by our consignor that these were purchased from a family member of Susan McDowell, about 30 years ago, who was widow of Thomas Eakins. It is known that upon her death that a great number of lesser works were found in the apartment and some were later sold and the majority went to the Pennsylvania Academy. SIZE: 1) 24″ x 15-1/2″. 2) 22-3/4″ x 15-1/2″. CONDITION: 1) Edges are toned and have bites and small tears, less than 1″. Otherwise good. 2) Edges have been cut, top edge with some bites and small tears. Generally good. 9-95416 (1,000-2,000)
