REMINGTON HEPBURN NO. 3 OFF HAND SCHUTZEN TARGET RIFLE. Cal. 40-70 Straight. SN 5705. Fine target rifle with 28-1/4” oct to rnd bbl, windgage globe front sight, factory installed spirit level in a dovetail near front end of octagonal section & a thick base, vernier tang sight with 3-1/4” staff. It has Schutzen style dbl set triggers. Mounted with nicely figured, checkered, American walnut, nickeled semi-schnable tip forearm & rnd knob Schutzen style buttstock with high straight comb, squared front edge with shallow cheekpiece & nickeled brass Swiss buttplate with short prongs. Stock is 13-3/8” LOP and appears to have been slightly shortened. Buttplate, however, is orig to rifle, as it has serial number stamped inside. Provenance: San Diego Police Museum. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains about 50% thin, orig blue with balance a light to medium patina. Receiver retains most of its orig case colors, strong in sheltered areas, fading elsewhere. Trigger bow & bottom tang are a gray patina. Breechblock & hammer retain most of their glossy factory blue. This rifle may have been re-chambered from a smaller caliber. Stock has a hairline back of top tang & a grain check in left side of wrist, with normal handling & use marks elsewhere. Forearm retains about 50% orig varnish, showing moderate to heavy wear. Buttstock retains most of its orig varnish. Buttplate retains traces of orig nickel & now appears slightly oversize. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-60182 JR373 (3,000-5,000)
