UNSIGNED (American, 19th Century) “NEGROES DANCING”. Oil on canvas tropical scene shows a man playing a guitar while two couples dance. They are in colorful costumes and the women’s dresses fall below the chest. A woman is seated with child and basket of tropical fruit in right corner under a palm tree which has a monkey atop. The colorful painting has a wonderful folk art appeal. Several labels are affixed to back including a type written label indicating the title and “Collection of Arnold Seligmann, Rey & Co Loan Berkshire Museum”. Another label indicating Wadsworth Athenaeum Seligmann. Arnold Seligmann was a noted art dealer in the first half of the 20th Century. Housed in an early carved wood frame. SIZE: 18” x 25-1/2”.
