NORTHWEST COAST FIGURAL OYSTER CATCHER BOWL, HAIDA, EARLY 20TH CENTURY. Hook-billed avian figure, body forming the bowl proper, with head and neck extended forward, and tail extended aft. Nostrils, eyes, wings, and tail delineated by carved outlines and painted red and black. A human face, emblazoned on topside of tail, stares skyward. “Haida” written in pencil, and an incised maker’s mark on the flat bottom. Surface of the bird’s body and the interior of the bowl – the latter painted black, exhibit the uniform, small divots resulting from painstaking carving. Size: 15” long x 6-1/2” wide x 4-3/4” high.
