WONDERFUL BALL-HEADED WARCLUB, EASTERN GREAT LAKES, 19TH CENTURY. Northeastern and Great Lakes Indians favored ball-headed warclubs carved of one piece of wood. They were formidable weapons in hand-to-hand combat. In public situations, men frequently carried clubs that were not actual weapons, such as this example. Such clubs served as a warriors “badge” – denoting “men’s business.” This club is carved of hardwood, the ball slightly burled. Size: 20” long. CONDITION: Minor scratches from use wear; old, patinated chip at end of handle. 4-55165 BL73 (2,500-4,500)
