REMINGTON ROLLING BLOCK NO. 1 SPORTING RIFLE WITH PROTOTYPE/EXPERIMENTAL BREECHBLOCK. Cal. 43 Spanish. SN 11790. Short bbl sporting rifle with 23-9/16” medium weight oct bbl, appears to be orig length, with German silver blade front sight & Remington’s semi-buckhorn, rear sight. It has maker’s name & address on top flat. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain, American walnut with 11” metal tipped, semi-schnable forearm & straight stock with semi-crescent buttplate. Breechblock is very unusual in that it has a spring-loaded, 2-pc lever on right side that, when actuated with the hammer in firing position, will automatically cock the hammer & open the breechblock for extraction & reloading. It then closes in normal manner leaving hammer cocked, ready for firing. This hammer & breechblock system is known as the Laidley Patent, which was obtained in 1866 by T.S.S. Laidley and C.A. Emory. The patent was actually sold to Whitney in 1870 & several thousand Whitney-Laidley Rolling Blocks were produced, whereas only a few Remingtons were produced. Consignor reports that this is one of only three known No. 1 sporting rifles in 43 Spanish cal. Provenance: ex-Frank Sellers Collection. CONDITION: Very good. Bbl retains blue in sheltered areas, being an overall smooth, plum/blue patina. Receiver is a mottled silver/brown patina. There is a hairline in left side of wrist, otherwise wood is sound & retains most of an old, lightly sanded refinish with several small nicks in buttstock. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with fine pitting. 4-60150 JR379 (2,500-4,000)
