FINE ABRAHAM SCHWEITZER KENTUCKY RIFLE. NSN. 54 Cal smooth bore. 44-1/4” oct bbl. Signed in script “A. Schweitzer” on top of the bbl. The lockplate is not marked externally. The rifle is mounted with an engraved four piece patchbox with daisy head typical of Lancaster County guns. The opener for the patchbox is at the front of the toe plate. Abraham Schweitzer was recorded in Lancaster Co. in 1794 when he made 12 rifles for the US Purveyor of Public Supplies. He moved to Franklin County, PA sometime before 1804 and died there in 1831. This rifle is pictured in Gunsmiths of Adams, Franklin, Cumberland County, PA. by Whisker, p. 91, where it is listed as “One of his earliest guns, possibly made in Lancaster”. Kindig gives more details on Schweitzer’s life and times. The curly maple stock has raised carving on the left side of the butt incised carving there and on the forearm. There is some carving around the tang of the bbl, the comb, lockplate and sideplate. CONDITION: Smooth brown patina on lock and bbl. Brass fittings have been polished but are beginning to tone. Some repaired cracks at the wrist and the stock now has a slight right castoff. Mechanically fine. 4-60220 FS739 (25,000-30,000)
