POUCH, APACHE, LATE 19TH C. Stylistically this pouch is immediately recognizable as being Apache. Fringes and metal cones in profusion around outer margins typify the object type. Overall characteristics of the beadwork in particular, including the moon and star symbols, suggest that this pouch was used for ceremonial purposes– perhaps for the Na-i-es (female puberty ceremony) or “Ghost Dance”. Size: 13” overall length, pouch proper 5-1/2” diameter. CONDITION: Hide somewhat desiccated, epidermis crackled, overall surface soiling, no bead work missing. 4-55215 (1,200-1,600)
